Alan Burns, FSA, MAAA
Al has experience in actuarial positions in both consulting
firms and insurance companies. His experience includes dividend
analysis, demutualization feasibility study, X-factor validation,
compliance with NAIC Illustration Regulation, financial review
work for insurance regulators and directed life insurance
mortality and lapse studies.
Al has the necessary experience and education (basic and
continuing), per the Academy of Actuaries Qualification Standards
for Prescribed Statements of Actuarial Opinion, to render
a public statement of actuarial opinion.
For one of his former employers, Al has:
- Supervised a staff of six, which included two FSA's and
an ASA.
- Had full accountability for the entire product development
process. Products developed included participating whole
life, paid-up insurance riders, term, universal life, flexible
premium deferred annuities, and single premium intermediate
annuities. Designed new marketing concepts. Referred to
in the Marketing Department as "the actuary who can
talk".
- Was one of the five senior officers selected for the
transition team when American Mutual Life began merger proceedings
in July, 1994. Was heavily involved in staffing issues.
Participated extensively in the due diligence process.
- Provided actuarial support necessary to maintain and administer
all company products. Revised dividend scales for existing
business to provide for equitable distribution and supervised
the installation into the daily cycle files.
- Directed all the experience studies performed in the
Actuarial Department including expense analysis and lapse
studies.
- Performed a number of financial reporting functions such
as the development of the company's corporate projections.
In addition, was involved in valuation.
- Assisted in corporate planning by analyzing such concepts
as optimal growth.
- Analyzed the effects of changes in federal income tax
law on the overall company operation and product development.
- Selected, managed and evaluated actuarial students.
- Served as the contact person for the Data Processing Department.
- Resolved a number of issues related to the installation
of a GAAP system.
- Assumed the role of Valuation Actuary from October 1984
to June 1985. Developed all FIT reserves required for the
compliance with TRA 84. Prepared Page 6 and Exhibit 8 of
the Statutory Annual Statement.
- Served as Actuarial Consultant in the conversion of the
computer system to LIFE/70
